As more and more people worry about housing affordability at home, awareness is growing that conventional “convenient” home rental accommodation options like Airbnb actually have an inflationary effect on local housing markets. In contrast, travellers who seek a “deep travel” experience and care about travel practices that are not so extractive to the local economy seek out the smaller, more generative travel option.
Kanga Homestay provides just that exchange by giving locals in rural, less-touristed areas the choice to host and welcome visitors, as well as giving families extra income that stays directly in the local community, making a lasting, positive impact on the entire village.
He learned about the Tanzanian Kanga, the ubiquitous East African patterned cloth that can be used not just as a towel, dress, blanket, or baby carrier, but also as a carrier of cultural messages across life events, families, and seasons. Thus, Kanga Homestay, a tapestry of local experiences and deep memory-keeping, was born.
Each host in the Kanga Homestays network has been selected after exactly such a personal exchange and experience, and is categorised as a “village stay” or “comfort stay,” based on the level of simplicity or amenities you can expect. All hosts offer boiled, travel-safe drinking water and include meals between check-in and check-out times.
Beyond that, hosts introduce travellers to other villagers, introduce them to religious rituals, unknown fruits, and hidden natural sites, and invite them into the kitchen to discover the magic that takes place over the stove. Most accommodations can be booked for between two and six nights.
Visiting a village and sharing in its routines, festivals, worship, and family life creates a depth of understanding that has led to many long-lasting friendships between guests and locals. And as Dominik’s adventures grew, so grows Kanga, with six new Southeast Asian host families in Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

I have a good degree of travel experience and I am familiar with that part of the world but I never went to Indonesia or Sri Lanka. I have travelled this way in India, including Kashmir and had a home stay in Ladakh. Previous experiences of deep travel have been to Burma, Africa and the Middle East.

Hi, this seems like an interesting opportunity. For this, I would like to be considered for the Indonesia opportunity. I am a writer and an editor based in India with experience in long-form journalism, literary nonfiction and writing about sustainability, place and identity.
The idea of being hosted by the locals at Kanga Homestay seems extremely intriguing and I believe it would help me look at Bali and Lombok from a whole different lens.
