As we approach, the relatively modest entrance into the grounds feels like a kind of understatement to the general majesty of the establishment, with the consequence that the doors function as a portal into a world of luxurious elegance.

Set on the riverside at one end of a bridge designed by Eiffel (the man of Parisian tower fame apparently built bridges before he decided to reach for the sky), the five-star hotel is a heritage property that used to house a 19th-century winery. It offers 47 stylish master suites, suites and rooms that all have views on the river Douro, ensuring that guests can enjoy beautiful natural light and splendid sunsets.

The bar and restaurant open to exquisite terraces overlooking the Douro, although the classy decoration of the Library Bar makes it a serious competitor to outdoor sitting.

By way of an introduction to the wine culture of the Douro Valley, the Bar offers a special wine tasting they call the Wine Flight: while a selection of white or red wines is served, the team provides explanation relative to the grape varieties, the winemaker, and the history of each wine.

Naturally, the wines are well accompanied by a board of Portuguese cheeses and cured meats.

Either in the spacious vaulted dining room or on the spectacular terrace, dinner here is an occasion that lingers in the memory long after the last glass is set down. The restaurant offers a creative cuisine based on quality local products and a superb selection of wines.

Chef Milton Ferreira, who was raised in the region, prepares dishes that combine a celebration of local flavours with a touch of innovation inspired by the world’s famous kitchens.

The night of our stay, the flavours of the dishes are rivalled only by the artistic design of their presentation: the lombo de tuna (tuna loin) and the bacalhau (cod) are duly photographed before we start to eat. The dessert I choose is a pera bêbeda (drunk pear), a pear baked in port wine and spices, which combines very nicely with a touch of ice cream.

The wines are quite noble, too, and I especially enjoy the rich flavour of the 2017 Vintage Port: although I am not an expert, I note that the sweetness is present but not dominating, making room for the complex structure of this sensual nectar.

The elegant garden lined with palm trees has direct access to the riverside promenade and leads to a gracious outdoor swimming pool and a tennis court. While the hotel is equipped with all that is necessary to host meetings or private dinners, the garden in particular turns into an ideal scenery for events such as weddings or corporate occasions.

Families are warmly welcomed at the Vintage House Hotel and the needs of children are well taken into consideration, with services such as connecting rooms, extra beds and cots. There are menus for kids at the restaurants and board games are available.
